Naya Marley, a junior at the charter school in Santa Clarita, showcased her songwriting abilities, singing voice and skills playing the ukulele during the latest “Eye on the Valley” on KHTS.

“I really wanted to write a song about how the world works and how everything is tied together,” Marley said during the show. “I just really wanted to write a song about how I feel about society.”

The name of the song is “How,” and opens with the story of a seemingly carefree girl with flowers in her hair who wishes she had a friend, and a boy who watches her and wishes she would see him.

During the song’s chorus, Marley sang, “As the world spins around / We sing, we dance, we love / Never knowing why / Never asking asking / As the world spins around / We grieve, we mourn, we cry / Never knowing why / Never asking how.”

The song then moves on to draw a contrast between “candy” skies and the sun shining with lies told, the “numbing hum” of the sea, and haunting references to a “hell” on earth before returning to a slight variation of the chorus.

Marley noted that while the song was completed as her “act of kindness” for SCVi’s Kindness Project, she’s actually been writing it for the past four years.

The girl in the song was inspired by one of Marley’s friends during a class trip to Washington DC, when the friend decided to put flowers in her hair.

“She was that kind of person that would just do everything carefree,” Marley recalled. “So the lyric, ‘Flowers in her hair / Watching the world without a care,’ just came from that.”

“I hope that everybody who has gotten a chance to hear (‘How’) is as moved as I was,” said Kevin Becker, host of “Eye on the Valley.” “Because I think it’s something that we kind of need right now, is as much kindness as we can put out there.”
