Students, family and teachers gathered at Wednesday’s William S. Hart District board meeting to advocate for the continuation of the French Language program at Saugus High School.
The call to action comes as it was revealed the foreign language program would be terminated at Saugus High School following the resignation of the French teacher, Ashley Rubay.
“It is disappointing the district is not expanding the program but is instead cutting it,” said Rubay. “I learned to speak French from Saugus High School and was given the incredible gift of language.”
The French program at Saugus High School has been popularly attended for many years, and is just one of the foreign languages offered at the school.
Now there is a possibility that the French program will be put to an end next year as there is no teacher at the high school for the program.
“There is a possibility that next year I won’t be able to take an AP French class after three years of taking it and earn my biliteracy seal,” said junior French student Celeste.
Currently, there are 140 students in the program at the school. Dissenting students and parents have also contacted the French Consul for Los Angeles to voice their support for keeping the program.
“The French program must and should remain intact,” said parent Dinh Montané. “The past three weeks we have been rallying to do this.”
The district is set to vote on the year’s budget, and the future of the French program, on June 15.
