Officials with the William S. Hart Union High School District Governing Board unanimously approved a temporary new grading policy that effectively eliminates “D” and “F” letter grades, and teachers within the district have been instructed not to administer final exams for the Spring semester.
On Wednesday evening, officials convened virtually on Zoom in order to host their regular board meeting, where they unanimously adopted a temporary new grading policy in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The temporary system allows students to earn the traditional letter grades of A, B and C, while the D and F grades are replaced by “Credit” or “No Credit.” Additionally, students have the option to choose between earning the three letter grades or the binary choice of credit or no credit for each individual class.
“In this sense, there are no fails,” said Hart District Superintendent Mike Kuhlman. “Students would either receive credit or not receive credit for a class.”
Additionally, only students who had a failing grade prior to March 20 would be able to receive a “no credit.”
“This would prevent us (from) having large numbers of students who may have been negatively impacted by not receiving credit for a course,” Kuhlman said during the board’s previous meeting.

In addition to the new grading system, Kuhlman said that teachers within the Hart District have already been instructed not to administer final exams, and that only assignments that can help raise a student’s grade should be assigned.
“Traditional final exams, cumulative final exams don’t make sense in this particular environment,” he said. “Instead, we have asked school sites and teachers to only include assignments at the end that can help students raise their grade.”

OMG! This makes a graduation certification worthless. It no longer has any influence. You only have to enroll, not even show up.
Seriously…these seniors have been in school for 13 years and because the last two months were disrupted…and they still have hw assignments…they didn’t earn their HS diploma? It’s called a diploma…maybe you didn’t learn that during your full 13 years of school. I don’t think you showed up.
Khulman is a joke. This district is a joke. I work with schools all over California and I’ve never come across a group of leaders and schools so pleased to pat themselves on the back and offer so little to such a tax wealthy community. Shame on you all.

Unfortunately, you are not functionally aware of the reality of the world we are living in right now. The grade adjustments are temporary not permanent. You are functionally unaware of all the incredible work that teachers are doing in very difficult conditions like no one has dealt with before. Grading has become a very difficult task when you have no way to guarantee that students even have access to the curriculum. Speaking of functionally illiterate, I think you meant en masse because an masse does not mean anything. Also, your last sentence is a fragment. I hope you and your family are healthy.
It’s upsetting to me to read how easy it seems for some to use such inflammatory criticism during such an unprecedented time. Offering constructive criticism can help those trying to respond to this crisis. Politicizing and condemning those pioneering to find solutions helps no one. Mistakes are inevitable. We are all making it up as we go along. Don’t make this crisis any harder than it needs to be. If anyone has a different idea that might work, let’s hear it.
