Hart School Board Discusses Hart High’s Mascot, Human Resource Forum

At Wednesday’s regularly scheduled William S. Hart Union High School District board meeting, the revitalized Human Resource Forum and Hart High’s mascot were discussed.

During the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement, the Santa Clarita City Council has established a joint venture with the Hart School Board to revive the decades-old Human Resource Forum.

“Reflecting on our last board meeting, we adjourned in honor of Memorial Day… George Floyd’s muder was captured on video that day and it has started a warranted (response),” said board member Dr. Cherise Moore. “I found myself crying on multiple days, thinking about my husband and my son… As leaders of our district it is on us to lead honest discussion. Discussion that needs to happen regularly.”

Dr. Moore encouraged the board to work in relation with the City of Santa Clarita to create a new Human Resource Forum, allowing students, staff and parents a place to “make long lasting change” within the district and the city.

Students and graduates of Hart High School also voiced their concerns regarding the “problematic” Indian mascot.

Julia Estrada, a Hart High graduate, wrote to the board asking for the change of the mascot as well.

“I have worked with peers who have pitched new mascots,” Estrada wrote. “I am dedicated to this… I am willing to take the workload.”

Estrada’s issue with the mascot is not the name ‘Indian,’ but with the culture of Native Americans being “co-opted and belittled” to mascot status.

During the public comments section of the meeting, 46 students also wrote in urging the board to hold their approval of the 2020 and 2021 curriculum to include more studies and writings from people of color to better educate students and hopefully prevent racism.

Despite these discussions, no official action was taken regarding the Human Resource Forum nor the Hart High Indian mascot.
