American Red Cross is the nation’s largest single supplier of blood and blood products. Collecting approximately 40% of blood supply and distributing to over 2500 hospitals and transfusion centers around the United States. Due to this distribution, the Red Cross is key component in protecting donors and patients by increasing the availability of blood. They are the first to help create and implement testing for infectious diseases and a big contributor to clinical trials which help improve blood safety.
Red Cross’s mission is minimizing human suffering when facing emergencies by coordinating volunteers and donor’s generosity. American Red Cross Biomedical Services’ mission it to serve the American people in a safe, reliable, and cost-effective blood services through donations.
The American Red Cross blood donors are everyday people, from high school students, factory workers, business executives, to parents and grandparents. Their generosity to help the community and help others play a key part in modern healthcare delivery. Many times, life-saving treatments involve a degree of blood transfusions and without the blood donors, these procedures would not be possible without the safe and reliable blood supply.

The donation process is simple. First is registration, where basic eligibility and donation information must be given. There’s some information about donating blood and asked for a form of identification. A mini-physical is given asking some confidential questions about health history and places you’ve traveled.
There doesn’t need a specific reason to donate blood, it’s completely voluntary. However, there are some benefits. You’ll be able to check your pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and hemoglobin levels. Donations will take approximately 8-10 minutes in a safe and sterile environment. Donations of platelets, red cells or plasma, can take up to two hours. After donating, it’s important to eat or have a refreshment in the refreshment areas. You can continue normal activities after 10-15 minutes of rest.
There’s a number of different donations, with the most common being Whole Blood. Additionally, Power Red, Platelets, Plasma donations are options to donate. Two other types of donations are Autologous, where a doctor orders a prescription to donate blood before surgery. Directed donations are made for a specific friend or family member with a doctor’s prescription.
