Starting between the Hyatt Valencia and Westfield Valencia Town Center, the marathon, half marathon and 5K races began at 7 a.m. with the Mayor’s Walk at 7:05 a.m. and the Kid K Fun Run at 8:30 a.m.

The Santa Clarita Marathon also celebrated its 20th anniversary on Sunday; the race originally began in 1995.

“I love the enthusiasm of the crowd and the fact that this is our 20th year. It has grown so much to be one of the most important things in Southern California for people to train,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Marsha McLean. “I loved that so many people signed up.”

Runners started to come in from the marathon and half marathon a couple of hours into the event.

The male winner of the Santa Clarita Marathon was Brandon Jauregui, 24, of Saugus, with a time of two hours, 25 minutes and 18 seconds. The female winner was Carri Arrieta, 49, of Moreno Valley, with a time of three hours, 22 minutes and eight seconds.

“I was online and saw the race and saw the pictures and I thought it was pretty. I had never ran over here so I decided to enter it,” Arrieta said. “I fell in love with the city, I’ll definitely be back next year.”

Director of Public Works, Robert Newman, also participated in the 5K portion of the race.

“(The course) is pretty similar. Based on construction, we changed it a little bit but it hasn’t changed in a while,” said Newman. “It was enjoyable, it’s actually the first time I’ve ran it.”

Newman added that the Santa Clarita Marathon also brings awareness to the bike, hiking and walking paths around the Santa Clarita Valley.

“Everybody loves Santa Clarita, it’s such a family friendly community and the fact that we sponsor events like this, people love it and that’s why they love to live here,” said McLean. “That’s why kids come back to live here after they’ve been away to college, they still come back to Santa Clarita. That says a lot.”
