The Santa Clarita chapter of the nonprofit Compassionate Friends, a grief support group, is preparing to host their 19th annual Candle Lighting Remembrance Ceremony on Sunday.
The community is invited to join members in honoring the memories of the “sons, daughters, brothers, sisters (and) grandchildren who left us too soon,” said event organizers.
Community members impacted by the recent Saugus High shooting are also invited to attend, said Chapter Founder Alice Renolds.
The evening is set to include music, featured performers, a video presentation, the reading of poems and the lighting of candles, which are provided to all who attend, according to Renolds.
“Some of our members call it their Christmas with their child,” said Renolds.
Compassionate Friends is an organization offering support, comfort and understanding to families who have experienced the death of a child, sibling or grandchild through monthly meetings, according to the national website.
The Santa Clarita chapter has held its Candle Lighting ceremony for nearly 20 years, allowing friends and family a chance to remember and heal after the loss of a child, grandchild or sibling, according to Renolds.
“This candle lighting ceremony is a symbolic way of showing the love we continue to carry for our children, even though they are no longer with us physically,” said the official event statement.
The 9th Annual Candle Lighting Remembrance Program is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at La Mesa Jr. High School, located at 26623 May Way in Santa Clarita.
