Seventh Annual SCV Charity Chili Cook-Off Returns With One Chef Winning Two Prizes

The seventh annual SCV Charity Chili Cook-off was held Thursday evening, and one chef placed in the top three in two different competitions, officials said.

The event was held at the Oaks Club at Valencia and successfully raised money for two local animal rescue organizations: Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita and St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary/Lange Foundation, according to officials.SCV Charity Chili Cook-Off

“It was very successful,” said Nicole Stinson, the event organizer. “The venue was packed, and the people all had good things to say about the venue despite the rainy day.”

This year, over 45 chefs competed for the People’s Choice prize and the Judges’ Choice prize, according to officials.

For the People’s Choice prize, JohnHart Real Estate took home first place, Sonja Randall from Smokin’ Bar-B-Quties took home second place and Kimberly Egan from DSJ Office Services took home the third place prize.

For the Judges’ Choice prize, Sonja Randall from Smokin’ Bar-B-Quties took first place, Channi Kaur from Channi’s Kitchen took second place and Travis Sabadin from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department took the third place prize.

SCV Charity Chili Cook-Off“This fun event has become increasingly popular each year, which really makes a difference for the organizations it has supported over the years,” said Event Co-Chair Steve Portaro in a previous KHTS article.

This year’s event was judged by local musician Karli Webster, a finalist on “The Voice” Season 13; Karen “Doc” Halligan, who appeared on Animal Planet and has a regular segment on KTLA; Leslie Kaz, a local culinary chef; and Sean Malin, a local food critic.

Proceeds from this year’s event went to Shelter Hope Pet Shop Santa Clarita and St. Bonnie’s Sanctuary/Lange Foundation, with the total amount of funds raised still being counted on Friday.

Dogs from both organizations were also at the event in an effort to get them adopted, according to officials.

“We had a lot of success with receiving pet adoption applications,” Stinson said.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
