The top three finalists from the first local competition at Keyboard Galleria are ready to perform for the final local round of competition at Concert In The Park.  When it comes to the Country Showdown, KHTS has a strong reputation.  In the last three years of participation, KHTS local winners have gone on to the National Competition on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville after winning locally, statewide, and regional.  KHTS Winners: 2012 National Winner – Poor Man’s Poison; 2013 Nationals Finalist – Suzanne Harper; and 2014 Nationals Finalist – Marie Wise-Hawkins.  Read more in an article on the KHTS website: Three Country Showdown KHTS AM-1220 Local Competition Winners To Perform At Concerts In The Park.  The finalist of this round will go onto state competition at Knott’s Berry Farm before continuing on to regional and national. Join in the competition that has seen competition performances by: Martina McBride, Sara Evans, Jordin Sparks, Miranda Lambert, Tim McGraw, Toby Keith, and Garth Brooks, to name a few.

Museum Of The Bible's Exhibit 'Passages' Comes To Santa Clarita-Passages “Dead Sea Scrolls”

Passages is an interactive exhibit that chronicles the history of the Bible.  Approximately 400 artifacts are used to tell the stories.  Some of the artifacts are the Dead Sea Scrolls, a Bible that traveled to the moon on Apollo 14, and a letter handwritten by Martin Luther on the night before he was charged with heresy.  Kids can take part in the parting of the Red Sea with Moses, dress as an animal on Noah’s Ark, and feed the lions so they don’t eat Daniel!

 LA SummerFest “RENFest”

RENFest at LA SummerFest marks the opening of Shakespeare in the Park.  First up on the Shakespeare agenda is Twelfth Night-A Rock Musical.  Twelfth Night is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies and it is reimagined as a rock & roll musical.  It will have all Shakespeare’s original text, with original music, and a live band on stage.  All performances are free.  Additional performances will be held July 19, 25, and 26 beginning at 7:30pm.  Bring your family, friends, picnic baskets, chair and blankets for this free evening under the stars.

Triumph Foundation “Let’Em Roll Casino Night”Triumph Foundation To Hold Casino Night For People With Spinal Cord Injury

Triumph Foundation is hosting the 6th Annual “Let’Em Roll Casino Night.”  The evening includes Texas Hold’Em Poker Tournament, Craps, Blackjack and Roulette.  Tickets also include a prime rib dinner, music, dancing, and silent auction.  Proceeds of this event will go towards replacing items lost during a fire in Triumph’s storage unit.  The Triumph Foundation works to minimize the obstacles a patient faces after suffering a spinal cord injury.  Tickets are available online.

“Safety Town–Santa Clarita”

The Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation is sponsoring “Safety Town – Santa Clarita” camps.  The camps are 3-1/2 hours per day for five days that teach safety education and awareness.  The camps are geared for Transitional Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten  age children.  During each camp, children will learn and have fun practicing essential safety skills they will use in their everyday lives at home and school, through repetitive, interactive instructional play.  “Safety Town” is a miniature city built to scale of a small child with a playground, traffic lights, street & stop signs, crosswalks & streets.  Children will practice Fire Safety, Earthquake & Disaster Safety, Personal Safety/Stranger Danger, Water Safety, Vehicle & Passenger Safety, Playground Safety, Pedestrian Safety, and Bicycle Safety.  Register online or by calling 661-299-8942.  Fees are $150 per child and include a T-Shirt and school bag.  Scholarships are available.

The Santa Clarita Valley Family YMCA hold a Teen Travel Day Camp for incoming 6th through 9th grade teens.  “Teen Day Camp ensures the optimum amount of fun and excitement for middle school campers.”  There are five day and three day options with travel occurring on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  Register online.

Summer Beach Bus Offers Discount Trips To Santa Monica BeachCity Of Santa Clarita “Summer Beach Bus”

The City of Santa Clarita is taking us to Santa Monica, the easy way, on comfortable and air-conditioned buses.  Summer Beach Bus offers two routes each weekend, with one route serving the east side of the City and the other route, servicing the west and south sides.  Travelers can bring beach chairs, coolers, and surfboards.  Fares are $3 for adults and kids and $1.50 seniors and people with disabilities.  Buses arrive in Santa Monica between 10:00am-10:15am and depart back to Santa Clarita at 4:30pm.  Pick Up Locations: Canyon Country Park, Soledad Canyon Road & Solamint, Soledad Canyon Road & Shangri-La Drive, Railroad Avenue & 15th Street, Newhall Avenue & Valle Del Oro, Newhall Avenue & Sierra Highway, the Via Princessa Metrolink Station, The Newhall Metrolink Station, and the McBean Regional Transit Center.

Come meet Sally Van Swearingen, The Domestic Violence Center of SCV “star dancer”.  Slip on your dancing shoes for “Dancing With Our DVC Star Sally Van Swearingen Fundraiser.”  There will be professional dancers that will conduct some quick training sessions on a variety of dance styles.  Then dance the night away.  Tickets are $25 and will serve as proxy votes for Santa Clarita’s Dancing With Our Stars even coming in August.

Feline Conservation Center “Twilight Tour”The Exotic Feline Breeding Compound

The Feline Conservation Center, also known as The Cat House, is hosting its “Twilight Tour.”  The “Twilight Tour” is an important part of the Center’s public awareness and educational programs to promote endangered species preservation and conservation.  The “Twilight Tour” is open when the cats are more active than during the day.  Visitors can wander around parts of the compound that are not open to visitors during the day.  Picture taking is allowed.  Barbeque and baked items will be available for purchase.  Take part in the raffle.  The Tour is for adults 18 years and over.  Admission is $20 per person.  Tickets can be pre-paid over the phone between 10:00am-4:00pm (except Wednesday).  Tickets at the door are on a cash basis only.

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood.
