Country Showdown 20152015 Country Showdown

When it comes to the Country Showdown, KHTS has a strong reputation.  In the last three years of participation, KHTS local winners have gone on to the National Competition on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville after winning locally, statewide, and regional.  KHTS Winners: 2012 National Winner – Poor Man’s Poison; 2013 Nationals Finalist – Suzanne Harper; and 2014 Nationals Finalist – Marie Wise-Hawkins.  If you have dreams of becoming a country music recording artist, you still have time to enter.  The deadline is Wednesday, June 24 at 5pm.  Send a MP3 of two songs, along with your contact information and application to carl@hometownstation.com.  The first of two rounds of Local Competition will take place at Keyboard Galleria on Saturday, June 27 at 5pm.  The second round of Local Competition will take place at Concerts in the Park on Saturday, July 18.  The finalist of the second round will go onto state competition at Knott’s Berry Farm before continuing on to regional and national. Glory SCV 2015Glory SCV 2015

Glory SCV will be an event filled with music from nationally known contemporary Christian artists such as Rend Collective, Phil Wickham, and The Afters.  This family fun day will also include local vendors and Christian merchants, plus affordable food and beverages.  There will be a free kid’s area with supervised fun, games and activities.  A full line up of performers is available online.  Tickets range from $10 to $75 and are available online.

SCV Youth ProjectSCV Youth Project's Sweet Charity Cake Auction Raises More Than $20K
“Sweet Charity Cake Auction”

Santa Clarita’s sweetest event is the SCV Youth Project “Sweet Charity Cake Auction.”  This is the seventh annual Cake Auction and features uniquely inspired and decorated cakes that reflect a business or organizations theme which is paired with individualized products, gifts and/or services.  Auction guests can view and bid on the cakes.  Cakes will be awarded prizes based on their originality, creativity, and the cake that raises the most money. The SCV Youth Project provides free services to teens in the Santa Clarita Valley on issues including: life challenges, depression, suicide, grief/loss, peer pressure, and drug/alcohol abuse.

Santa Clarita Valley's Circle Of Hope Hosting Run/Walk For Life At Castaic LakeCircle Of Hope “Tri Tip Throwdown”

Come be part of the Circle of Hope “Tri Tip Throwdown.”  If you have a grilling reputation, now is the time to put your skills to the test all to benefit the Circle of Hope.  There is also a Pie Recipe Competition.  The afternoon will include a live band, line dancing and a beer garden.  Tickets for the event are available online for $10 for adults and $5 for children age 12 and under.  You can enter the competition online.  Circle of Hope’s mission statement says it provides emotional, financial and educational support to those diagnosed with cancer in the Santa Clarita Valley.  100% of donations and proceeds remain in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Canyon Theatre Guild “West Side Story”west side story

“Theatre lovers, get ready to rumble!’ with the Canyon Theatre Guild’s production of “West Side Story.”  Whether you are team Jets or team Sharks, everyone loves a love story.  The show opens Saturday, May 30 at 8am with a free Wine & Champagne Reception at 7pm.  In addition to the play, join director Patti Finley as she directs her farewell production at Canyon Theatre Guild after 20 years of involvement.  Patti and Greg will be moving to Idaho to be closer to family.  Adult tickets are $19.  Junior (under 18) and Senior (62 and over) tickets are $17.

Triumph Foundation Wheelchair Curling

The Triumph Foundation is partnering with Hollywood Curling for a “Wheelchair Curling” event.  Two-time Paralympic athlete Patrick McDonald will be teaching this special class reserved for wheelchair athletes who want to try curling.  Wheelchair Curling is an internationally recognized sport and competitive play is governed by the World Curling Federation. Cost is $10 in advance or $15 at the door.

Safety Town - Santa ClaritaSC Optimist Foundation “Safety Town–Santa Clarita”-Sign Up Now

The Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation is sponsoring “Safety Town – Santa Clarita” camps.  The camps are 3-1/2 hours per day for five days that teach safety education and awareness.  The camps are geared for Transitional Kindergarten, Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten age children.  During each camp, children will learn and have fun practicing essential safety skills they will use in their everyday lives at home and school, through repetitive, interactive instructional play.  “Safety Town” is a miniature city built to scale of a small child with a playground, traffic lights, street & stop signs, crosswalks & streets.  Children will practice Fire Safety, Earthquake & Disaster Safety, Personal Safety/Stranger Danger, Water Safety, Vehicle & Passenger Safety, Playground Safety, Pedestrian Safety, and Bicycle Safety.  Register online or by calling 661-299-8942.  Fees are $150 per child and include a T-Shirt and school bag.  Scholarships are available.

City Of Santa Clarita “Summer Beach Bus”Summer Beach Bus Offers Discount Trips To Santa Monica Beach

The City of Santa Clarita is taking us to Santa Monica, the easy way, on comfortable and air-conditioned buses.  Summer Beach Bus offers two routes each weekend, with one route serving the east side of the City and the other route, servicing the west and south sides.  Travelers can bring beach chairs, coolers, and surfboards.  Fares are $3 for adults and kids and $1.50 seniors and people with disabilities.  Buses arrive in Santa Monica between 10:00am-10:15am and depart back to Santa Clarita at 4:30pm.  Pick Up Locations: Canyon Country Park, Soledad Canyon Road & Solamint, Soledad Canyon Road & Shangri-La Drive, Railroad Avenue & 15th Street, Newhall Avenue & Valle Del Oro, Newhall Avenue & Sierra Highway, the Via Princessa Metrolink Station, The Newhall Metrolink Station, and the McBean Regional Transit Center.

Feline Conservation Center “Twilight Tour”

The Feline Conservation Center, also known as The Cat House, is hosting its “Twilight Tour.”  The “Twilight Tour” is an important part of the Center’s public awareness and educational programs to promote endangered species preservation and conservation.  The “Twilight Tour” is open when the cats are more active than during the day.  Visitors can wander around parts of the compound that are not open to visitors during the day.  Picture taking is allowed.  Barbeque and baked items will be available for purchase.  Take part in the raffle.  The Tour is for adults 18 years and over.  Admission is $20 per person.  Tickets can be pre-paid over the phone between 10:00am-4:00pm (except Wednesday).  Tickets at the door are on a cash basis only.

Connie and her husband, John, moved to the Santa Clarita Valley almost 30 years ago. Living in Santa Clarita for that long is the direct opposite of Connie’s childhood.
