Advanced Audiology Remains Longest-Standing Audiologist In Santa Clarita Despite Pandemic Challenges

Nola Aronson of Advanced Audiology is still the longest-standing audiologist in Santa Clarita after 33 years in business, despite the recent challenges of the coronavirus pandemic.

Aronson used her more than four decades of experience when the pandemic first began to continue to support her patients even while being forced to temporarily close her office’s doors.

“I was surprised that we had to be closed, because we are an essential business,” Aronson said. “We were here for everybody when everybody else was closed, and we did a lot of community service, which is what we’re known for.”

For more than two months, Aronson and her husband worked both over the phone and behind their closed office doors to help those in need, cleaning and repairing hearing aids, helping people correct simple issues over the phone and even mailing supplies out free of charge.

“We helped people for free, clean their hearing aids, get them working again,” Aronson said. “We gave out (to) over 500 patients free batteries, free hearing aid supplies. We paid for all the postage during these two and a half months we were closed and not making a penny, so we are here for our community.”

Those with hearing difficulties who need to read lips to understand others are likely struggling due to the current face covering mandate, and so Advanced Audiology is now offering clear plastic face masks as well.

As a senior herself with an elderly mother, Aronson noted she can relate to what many of her patients are experiencing both in terms of hearing, but also when it comes to isolation during the pandemic.

“We are isolated from others, especially if you’re in an assisted living facility or a nursing home — seniors are not able to get out; they’re not able to socialize,” Aronson said. “My mother, who is 89, is in one of those places, and I haven’t really been able to see her or take her to my house for over three months.”

This type of isolation creates stress in itself, and coupled with not being able to understand others or the television because of hearing loss, other health issues like depression could come as a result.

Aronson encouraged those who may be having trouble hearing to schedule an appointment for a free hearing screening at Advanced Audiology, with full diagnostic evaluations usually covered by Medicare and the latest hearing device technologies available.

“I wanted to stress during this very stressful time,” Aronson said, “that it still is extremely important to not ignore your hearing problems.”
