Insight Treatment is a teen mental health treatment center which assists teens with mental health issues, drug rehabilitation, sobriety and more.

Insight Treatment Center brought on Gordon, an alumni parent from Insight Treatment Center to discuss his experience.

As a child growing up, Gordon expresses he was raised to be a tough man. Feelings and mental health were never talked about among his family. Gordon had to hold back a lot of his mental health issues while living with them. If you showed your emotions during that time, you would get beat up for it because it showed you were weak.

“I left home at 18 and went back to London. Honestly, my mindset back then was I have to do what I have to do to make sure I’m never coming back here again” – Gordon

Gordon struggled through his romantic relationships to express his feelings and communicate as an adult. He was not taught simple life skills while growing up to help him talk about his feelings.

“I had no communication skills. My problem with any conflict or conversation was that I associated that with getting hit. Violence. So I always shut down when things got ugly. What happens then is the other person is getting upset because you’re not engaging. It was one of those situations where I had no skills” – Gordon

Expressing your emotions is one life skill that we should all be taught as children. Unfortunately, it does not always work out that way. Like Gordon, children are sometimes taught that emotions do not matter. Especially as a young man, some are taught to just be tough and get your work done for the day. This can effect your relationship with yourself and others in the future.
