Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita aims to help seniors maintain their independence in their own home safely by offering a “helping hand.”

“Our goal, our motive is to keep our seniors in their home where they want to stay,” said Owner Myles McNamara. “Home care is a personal assistant that comes in and gives our seniors that helping hand to stay in their own home.” 

McNamara clarified that home care and home health are two different things, with home health involving a nurse that is prescribed by a doctor to come to the home for medical purposes, such as wound care or monitoring vital signs.

In contrast, home care entails helping seniors with activities of daily living, such as meal preparation, making sure medications are taken on time, light housekeeping, laundry, grocery shopping, preventing slip-and-falls and more. 

“We’re sort of the adult child in their absence,” McNamara explained. “What we do is the, for lack of a better term, chores and oversight of our loved ones.”

This means that when an adult child has an hour to spend at their parent’s house, they can spend it enjoying quality time with their mom or dad instead of cleaning, running errands or checking up on medications, McNamara continued. 

“We’ll take care of that,” he said. “You come on over and sit and have a nice conversation with your mom.” 

When bringing up the possibility of home care with a senior loved one, McNamara emphasized the importance of context and terminology, advising adult children to be clear that Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita does not have nurses, they have personal assistants. 

“Our seniors are proud, they’re independent, they don’t want to be a burden,” he said. “You can’t put it in the perspective that we’re going to come in and take over Mom and Dad’s life and they’re going to lose their independence. No, quite the opposite. Mom and Dad, if they’re able, can self-direct. They can tell us what they’d like to have a hand with. They’re still the boss, we’re there just to give that helping hand to keep them in the home.”
