Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita is title sponsor for the event, which is set to raise awareness and funds for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), according to Myles McNamara, owner of Comfort Keepers.

“Suicide is the second leading cause of death in the United States for ages 15-34,” said McNamara. “(It’s) an issue that needs to be more in the forefront of everybody’s awareness.”

Santa Clarita residents are invited to start their own team for the walk or join the Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita team, which had raised $600 for the walk as of Wednesday, according to the event website.

The walk is set to include “activities of hope and healing,” such as “honor beads” for all participants, whether they have lost a loved one, struggle personally, are supporting a friend or family member, or all of the above, according to event officials.

“Suicide is non-discriminatory,” McNamara said. “It doesn’t matter what kind of car you drive, how big your house is. Suicide, mental illness, it needs to be made more aware so that people get rid of the stigma about talking with somebody.”

In addition to teens and young adults, McNamara noted that seniors are also “high on the suicide watch list” because of factors like terminal illness diagnoses and depression, with veterans a top priority for prevention efforts as well.

“A huge part of this demographic that we want to help is our veterans — over 20 veterans a day commit suicide,” McNamara said. “So we have to get the help out there, the mental health help out there, help our veterans, help our teens, help our seniors.”
