Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita Reminds Adult Children About Importance Of Hydration For Seniors

As temperatures continue to rise this summer, Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita officials are reminding adult children about the importance of making sure seniors stay hydrated, cautioning them that dehydration can lead to symptoms resembling dementia.

“The dog days of summer are coming, so dehydration is huge among our seniors,” said Myles McNamara, owner of Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita.

McNamara noted that he often receives calls from adult children telling him that their senior parent was “great” just last week, and seems to have had a sudden onset of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease and “can’t do anything.”

“Dementia doesn’t come on that fast, so Mom probably has a UTI, which is a urinary tract infection, which is brought on by dehydration,” McNamara said. “(It) has a lot of the same symptoms as dementia or Alzheimer’s disease — they’re confused, they’re disoriented.”

One way Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita staff can help care for seniors is by ensuring that they stay properly hydrated, according to McNamara.

“They’re called activities of daily living,” he explained. “Sometimes our seniors just need a helping hand to stay in their own home.”

Other activities of daily living the caregivers from Comfort Keepers Home Care Santa Clarita can assist with include making sure the senior is taking their medications on time, keeping up with their hygiene, eating nutritional meals and getting to their doctor’s appointments.

“Comfort Keepers provides anything that doesn’t take a medical license in the house,” McNamara said. “We want our adult kids to be able to go over and spend quality time with their parents, not run over there to be a caregiver or the choremaster.”

McNamara concluded, “So we not only help our seniors, we help our adult kids (with) the peace of mind. They can be the kids again and not the caregiver.”
