Outpatient Rehab In Santa Clarita Cautions Active Addicts About Changes In Available Drugs During Pandemic

An outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita is cautioning active addicts about changes to the drugs available during the coronavirus pandemic in hopes of preventing overdose deaths, which have been on the rise in recent months.

“I want to talk to the actively using addict right now, and what I want to say to you is, I know that the world of obtaining drugs is changed,” said Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV.

In the same way that restaurants, gyms and hair salons are either closed or operating very differently because of the coronavirus, the same can be said for drug dealers, according to Sharits.

“All these things that we used to do and just take for granted, in the world of drugs, it’s the same,” he said, noting that someone with a “usual” at their favorite restaurant can be compared to an addict with a “usual” drug order with their preferred dealer.

“I know who I’m buying from and I know what I’m getting and I know where I’m going,” Sharits said, referring to active drug users. “Well restaurants have changed their protocols now; a lot of them are not doing in-house dining, maybe they’re outside, a lot of them are not even open… Well the world of drugs is doing the same thing. You can’t just go down to wherever because they’re not standing there (any)more, and you can’t just call up.”

In addition, because travellers are being much more closely monitored in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the supply of drugs has “dramatically changed” as well, Sharits continued.

“So what happens in the world of drugs when that happens?” he asked. “People who transport or move or sell or make a living off of illegal substances are going to keep that going no matter what, COVID or no COVID… People who have crossed the line into addiction and need that drug are going to keep that going no matter what. So what’s happened is the quality of drugs and what they’re being made out of and how they’re being obtained and who we’re getting them from is completely changed.”

If an addict’s usual trusted connections are not available, they will turn to “anyone” to get their drugs, and if higher quality versions of their drugs are not available, they will accept “garbage drugs” instead, according to Sharits.

“What has happened as a result of that is more people are dying,” he said. “There was already enough people dying. There’s tons of overdoses all the time. Now that’s increased dramatically, because what’s available on the street is going to be more of things like the synthetic Fentanyls and the cut drugs and the really garbage drugs.”

Sharits concluded, “So the message that I want to send (to) anybody who’s an actively using drug addict, (who) is using, is use discernment in that. I know it’s hard to do. I know that you need your drug, but be really especially overly careful in what you’re doing. You can’t do the same amount of heroin that you were doing before if you don’t know what’s in it, so go easy. Be careful. And maybe that message saves a life or two.”

  1. People want to get high. They’d prefer to do it legally.

The Nancy Reagan drug test allows you to do heroin all night long on Friday and still test clean on Monday. If you smoke a joint Friday you will fail the same Monday test. The Marijuana part of the drug test measures THC metabolite residue in fat cells, not active intoxicants. It punishes people for past behavior on their own time, that has no possible effect on job safety. The THC metabolite test forces people into the back alleys and street corners for iffy street drugs.

It’s time weed was decoupled from dangerous drugs. Impairment that can’t be objectively measured, let alone correlated to a certain blood concentration of THC is not harmful. The cure is much deadlier than the “disease”.

Fact: There is less Fentanyl Poisoning in places with legal cannabis. ,
