“With everything going on in the world right now, it’s more important for us to encourage people to use the tools that are out there to maintain their sanity,” said Program Director Bob Sharits. “It is really easy to go nuts right now.”
Sharits continued that the shutdowns related to the pandemic have made it more difficult than ever for people to not get “caught up” in anxiety and depression, and possibly reach for a drink, drug or other addictive behavior to cope.

While mental health and substance use issues are increasing daily, Sharits noted that the pandemic has also made it difficult for treatment centers to remain open.
“We have this dramatic increase in mental health issues and we have this dramatic decrease in the availability of providers,” Sharits said. “That is not a good formula.”
However, Sharits continued that The Way Out Recovery SCV is continuing to share a message of encouragement for the public and offer treatment services both in-person and virtually.
“Individually, we can make sure that we’re taking care of ourselves,” he said. “One of the best ways that we can take care of ourselves is by asking for help. Asking for help is absolutely the first step to recovery, so if you or someone you love is struggling or suffering with mental health or substance abuse issues, please give us a call.”
The Way Out Recovery SCV has resumed in-person sessions on an individual basis while continuing to limit groups, with the safety of those in treatment a top priority, according to Sharits.
“We are maintaining the protocols and the standards and the suggestions that are put out by health agencies and local government,” he said. “(We’re) cleaning everything and doing temperature checks and masks and all of that stuff that we’re supposed to do, because your safety is our No. 1 concern.”
Regardless of whether an outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita is the right path for someone, Sharits noted that the staff at The Way Out Recovery SCV want to offer their support to anyone who might be struggling.
“Let us be your first call, and we’ll guide you to the place that you need to be if we can’t fill the need,” Sharits said. “We would love to help you, especially currently in this pandemic.”
