Program Director and Community Outreach Specialist Bob Sharits recently discussed how reaching out in times of stress can be vital to those with mental health and substance abuse issues as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Sharits said that with the world going through a “let’s see what happens” period, it can be tempting to think that issues of mental health and substance abuse can be set aside until the world opens back up. But the reality is often that the uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic can cause mental health and substance abuse issues to become even more prevalent.

“Mental health and substance abuse issues don’t care if there’s a coronavirus going on,” Sharits said. “It doesn’t stop. Mental health issues don’t take a break. Substance abuse issues don’t take a break. And in times like these, they can even be exacerbated more.”

Because of this, Sharits stressed that those who are struggling with addiction reach out for help, saying that the recovery community has found creative ways to support one another during the “Safer at Home” orders.

As the director of an outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita, Sharits finds himself living “in a world where today we are combating two different diseases.” He said that “we have a personal responsibility to not pass (COVID-19) on,” which involves social distancing practices.

At the same time, however, “we’re also dealing with recovery from various mental health issues and addiction,” Sharits explained. “The most effective treatment for that is contact with other people and gatherings and groups.”

The Way Out Recovery outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita is working to balance both the responsibility to keep social distancing in place while supporting the recovery community, Sharits said.

As a part of this push to support the community during these trying times, The Way Out Recovery has moved its outpatient rehab services to virtual platforms. Both group and individual sessions are being held virtually in order to offer treatment while conforming to “Safer at Home” guidelines.

“We were able to do that really without much of a hitch,” Sharits said. “There are some wonderful platforms out there for meeting and still maintaining what’s called HIPAA compliance, which means confidentiality basically.”

During the “Safer at Home” period, Sharits is set to offer free phone counseling via his personal cell phone “during this high-risk-for-relapse time.” You can contact Sharits directly at (661) 383-6550, or get in contact with The Way Out Recovery SVC outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita at (661) 296-4444.

Sharits stressed that the most important first step someone can take towards recovery is reaching out to others. “The Way Out Recovery is here for you,” he said. “If you or someone you love is struggling or suffering with mental health or substance abuse issues, please, please, please give us a call.”
