About 8.1 percent of adults in the United States meet the criteria to be diagnosed with substance use disorder, which translates to about 12,000 adults in the Santa Clarita Valley, according to Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV.

Those who “qualify” for this diagnosis, however, could fall anywhere in a wide range from the most mild to the most severe of the disorder, Sharits continued.

“There are some identifiers, some things that you can look at to sort of say whether or not you fit inside of that range,” he said. “Anywhere in that range, you would benefit from help.”

While some people may assume that in order to be diagnosed with substance use disorder, they must drink or use drugs frequently and heavily, but Sharits clarified that this is not an identifier.

“The qualification for the disorder is not dependent on how much you use,” he said. “There are lots of people who drink a lot of booze on a daily basis that do not qualify for a substance use disorder, … and then there are people who might drink once a month that do qualify.”

While anyone who thinks they might have a substance use disorder is encouraged to ask for help, those who may be wondering if a loved one has a substance use disorder — and if so, what to do about it — can also reach out to The Way Out Recovery SCV for guidance.

“Many of us stand back and we go, ‘God, my poor brother, sister, son, daughter, Mom, Dad, whoever — I think they have a problem with drinking or I think that they’re using drugs, but I don’t know how to say anything and I don’t want to say the wrong thing,’” Sharits said. “We help you (with) that.”
