“We believe in a supportive, non-punitive approach to treatment with the goal being the achievement of complete abstinence from mood and mind-altering substances,” The Way Out Recovery SCV officials said.

Although abstinence is an important goal, officials with the outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita allow clients to take their own journey towards recovery, both by offering individualized treatment plans and by allowing clients to make informed decisions about how to approach sobriety.

For instance, Program Director and Community Outreach Specialist Bob Sharits described how some people may put off treatment if they think an outpatient rehab will require them to give up alcohol at the same time as their drug of choice.

“I can sit here and tell you this, that one drug is the same as any other drug, that if you try stopping one and you switch to another, one of two things is going to happen: you’re going to go back to the other one, or the new one is going to be your new problem,” Sharits said. “All of that is true, but if I tell you that, there’s a lot of people that are going to go, ‘Oh my God, don’t call Bob because he’s going to make you stop everything,’ and I’m not going to do that.”

Instead, Sharits described the “non-punitive” approach offered by The Way Out Recovery SCV as one where each person is able to “show up how (they) show up.”

“We’re going to meet you where you’re at,” explained Sharits.

The outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita sees their place in facilitating recovery as one in which guidance is provided and people are allowed to learn from their own experiences. By surrounding each client with others who are going through the same struggles and offering guidance on how to live a better life, the truth will “sink in,” Sharits explained.

“One of the things that I don’t do is I will never label you or diagnose you or tell you you are an addict,” said Sharits. “I just want to have a conversation so that you can figure it out and make the choice for yourself. If you feel like you need help and you want to enter a treatment program, whether it’s with us or somebody else, I will absolutely help facilitate that.”
