“I’m going to do my best today to be a little bit uplifting, to let you know that you don’t have to panic,” said Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV. “Even in the midst of this time of unknown, … we can be grateful, we can be kind to each other, we can love each other, we can be helpful to each other.”

Sharits recommended residents take a minute to stop whatever they’re doing and take a deep breath.

“Just relax — everything you need is sitting right in front of you,” he said. “The people that you love are sitting around you. There’s a lot of stuff to be grateful for.”

When it comes to the constant wealth of ever-changing information available regarding the coronavirus, Sharits advised using what he called discernment while still remaining informed.

“Discernment means essentially to be a little bit skeptical,” he said. “If you’re sitting at home and you are scrolling social media and you’re reading all the articles and you are watching all the stuff, … absolutely, 100 percent, be informed. But do yourself a favor and don’t get caught up in the madness, because we don’t have to.”

When a person feels anxiety about the coronavirus, which may prompt them to panic and do things like stockpile items, Sharits maintained that stopping everything and taking a deep breath can be a big help.

“Take a breath — let’s slow everything down,” he said. “We don’t have to rush into it. Let’s just take our time and be mindful of what we’re doing.”

By making the decision to keep a perspective of gratitude even through these challenging times, Sharits noted that the community can come together in kindness, even while maintaining social distancing.

“Let’s take a minute and let’s get grateful,” Sharits said, “and look forward to all the ways that we can be helpful to each other and be kind and loving as we go through this week.”
