“I met with a family this morning, … (and) they have a child, 17 years old, who is struggling,” said Bob Sharits, program director at The Way Out Recovery SCV. “I said to them, ‘Have you ever heard of A Light of Hope?’ And they said no. I was shocked and amazed by that, because I think that everybody in Santa Clarita, whether you have teeagers or not … should know about A Light of Hope.”

For the last 12 years, A Light of Hope has been providing support free of charge for youth and young adults with behaviors or mental health issues such as substance abuse, depression, anxiety or suicidal thoughts, according to Founder Tim Traurig.

Weekly support groups and weekend activities are offered to youth and their families, and parents are provided with tools on how to handle the struggles their teen is facing.

“Many of the parents come in just really at their wit’s end with how to try to help in the situation,” Traurig said. “We really help them learn what they can fix and what they can’t, what they can control, what they can’t, how to what we call ‘starve the monster’ of addiction or those self-destructive behaviors instead of feeding it.”

In addition, youth are given tools and walked through the 12 steps of recovery, with a focus placed on the root cause of their issues in an effort to allow healing to take place, Traurig continued.

A Light of Hope uses an “Alternative Peer Group” recovery model, which Traurig noted helps make the organization unique.

“When you can get like-minded individuals with similar backgrounds and experiences and connect them to one another in a safe, sober environment (to) encourage one another, it can be really powerful,” he said. “So we try to get them to connect … (and) use that peer group, the power of that positive peer group to pull them away from that negative peer group that can have such an influence on our young people’s lives.”
