The group counseling sessions offered by the outpatient rehab in Santa Clarita focus on allowing each member to share with others who have been through similar life experiences, offering support and accountability in a safe setting.
Throughout the coronavirus-related business closures, group counseling offered by The Way Out Recovery SCV has only been available remotely. As the “Safer at Home” guidelines are beginning to relax, group sessions can now meet in-person with limitations on size set by the state and local governments.
Sharits noted that many clients are relieved to once again be able to connect face-to-face for group counseling and substance abuse recovery support.
“We’ve been in this pandemic for a while now and it is showing,” Sharits said. “And I know personally and professionally that this pandemic and what we’ve been going through is wearing people thin. People are suffering out there. They’re suffering with mental health issues, they’re suffering with substance abuse issues and overall stress and relationships and it’s a tough time for everybody right now.”
Sharits was quick to note that feelings of sadness and of being overwhelmed are normal, natural responses to a global pandemic and the ensuing isolation and financial uncertainty.
“As mental health goes, we’re in the middle of a lot of stuff right now. And it’s wearing people thin. So the first thing that I want to say is this: is that you can get through this, you are incredible, awesome, amazing human beings. This anxiety that you are feeling right now is absolutely normal; it does not have to debilitate you. This depression that you may be in, this sadness, this grief this stuff that you are facing does not have to debilitate you.”
Sharits asked those interested in finding out more about substance abuse and mental health support services to “reach out.”
“We want everyone to know that if you are out there suffering please, please make the phone call,” Sharits said. “We will make sure that you get the services that you need. We’re a local, intensive outpatient program focused on substance abuse and mental health. … We are contracted with most major insurance companies … (and) treat adolescents, teenagers and their families.”
