Bob Sharits, host of “The Way Out Recovery Hour” on KHTS Radio, was joined on the air this week by Sammy Edwards, the founder, CEO and program director at New Road Recovery Services.

“Everybody who calls, I want to be confident that I’m sending them somewhere where they’re actually going to get clean and sober,” Sharits said, speaking to Edwards, “and your sober living environments have always been a place where I go, ‘Go here and you’re going to get the help you need.’”

Edwards noted that staff strive to create a non-judgmental, welcoming environment at their all-male recovery homes at New Road Recovery Services.

“We don’t judge people when they come in,” he said. “There’s no punity for being loaded when you come in. If you show up, (we say), ‘Good man, come on, give me a hug. Come on in and what can we do for you?’”

The social model of the recovery homes is based on the 12-step program with an emphasis on sponsorship, according to Edwards.

“It’s just like the four suggestions when you … go to a (12-step) meeting,” he said. “You’re going to go to a meeting, you’re going to get a sponsor, you’re going to get a service commitment and you’re going to take the steps.”

Part of the non-judgemental approach of New Road Recovery Services is to welcome back individuals who have relapsed and help them learn from the experience without shame. Staff also use this as an opportunity to teach others in the recovery homes about the importance of not judging others in their journey of recovery, Edwards noted.

“We’re always going to have that one guy that doesn’t know how to embrace somebody the second or the third time they’re back,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for us as a community to teach that person, and that person gets to change.”

Sharits added that there is such a thing as a “successful relapse,” which he noted can help solidify a person’s commitment to their recovery.

“More times than not, if somebody relapses and they come back, that’s where success takes place,” Sharits said. “When they come back after a relapse and they’re willing to learn from that experience, and I’ve seen it so many times where people come back and now their recovery is solid.”

Then speaking to Edwards about New Road Recovery Services, Sharits continued, “You say non-judgmental and welcoming — if I’m the guy that you’ve seen a couple of times, and one more time, here I come with my head hanging down and I’m feeling ashamed about myself, you guys are going to say, ‘Welcome home, brother. Give me a hug.’”
