“Since we’ve opened our doors at The Way Out Recovery, we’ve made a promise to Santa Clarita that anybody that walks through our door, whether we can provide services to them or not, we will find some place for them to fit into,” said Program Director Bob Sharits. “So I was really, really excited when a month ago, Child & Family Center announced (the new program).”

Child & Family Center officials launched the program in September in an effort to help adolescents ages 12-17 and young adults ages 18-25, according to Charity Wabuke, the center’s program manager.

Sharits noted that despite an increase in the number of Americans who now have health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act, many people have specialized forms like Medi-Cal that can limit their access to important services.

As a result, the creation of a substance abuse program for youth with Medi-Cal will enable many adolescents and young adults to seek treatment that they wouldn’t have access to otherwise.

“What makes the drug Medi-Cal program that we’re running really unique is the types of services that clients will be able to access,” Wabuke explained. “Historically, the substance abuse program has pretty much been group driven, but because of the changes that came out effective July 1 for drug Medi-Cal clients, in addition to getting groups, they’re able to get individual treatment, family treatment, crisis treatment, stabilization treatment, as well as after-care services.”

New after-care services being introduced through the Child & Family Center program are called recovery support services, which Wabuke noted will help clients who complete the program to re-acclimate themselves back into their everyday life while linking them with positive resources they can continue to use.

In addition, Medi-Cal clients are now able to access six to nine hours worth of services per week, as opposed to the 50 minutes they were typically allotted in the past, according to Wabuke.

“It really starts with even working with the client to identify, what is their relationship with substances, what are their goals for being in the substance program,” she said, “and then what are the services that we offer that will be in alignment with their overall treatment goals?”
