Inactive Immune Response Study, Why Healthy Bones Save Lives

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

Inactivity reduces immune function according to new French space program study. At first the study looked at the effects of zero gravity and bone loss.

Finding that the effects of inactivity and confined isolation of astronauts looks similar to aging here on earth.

But the study revealed a lot more and some of it more relevant than ever.

With the Covid lock down, too many people now experience the “Coronagut Syndrome”. Okay, just made that name up, but you know what I mean. Too much emotional stress, no gyms and grocery shopping the only outings allowed for months. Even gym rats put on a few unwanted pounds, most of us put on a lot more.

But this study also shows how lock down conditions effect bone loss and more importantly the immune system.

About the Study

First published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, French scientists reveal relationships between inactivity, aging, bone loss, and the immune system.

Scientists compared a group of young rats, old rats and a young group on lock down, unable to use their legs. After just three weeks the inactive group had similar bone loss and immune deficiency as the old group.

Because important white blood cells, the mobile immune system, are made in the bones. When bones don’t have the stress they need to stay healthy, the immune system suffers too.

What it Means To YOU

Not all stress is bad. The physical stress of twenty to forty minutes of sweaty exercise a day, slows the aging process, improves bone health and boosts immune system.

As we age, we naturally lose some bone mass and immune function, but exercise can minimize that loss.
