Sleep Strategy Against Coronavirus

By Dr. Thomas Polucki

Sleep issues continue to rise with the coronavirus crisis. Also, any level of insomnia contributes to decreased immunity, increasing risks for even more mental and physical problems. Especially increasing the risk of injury, due to decreased focus and attention. But with a few simple changes, you could start supercharging your health with better sleep.

The Problem

Less than seven hours a night, outside of recovery prime time, from ten to two,  impairs function. So rearrange your schedule for early to bed early to rise for better mood, creativity, and productivity.

More importantly research shows that poor sleep reduces your body’s ability to fight off viruses like the coronavirus.

First, the bedroom, where comfort must take priority.  If you wake up achy, something needs to change. You need a Goldilocks bed in a cool, low seventies, dark, I mean dark room. You may need black out curtains and to cover any light source, especially a clock.

Try not to hang out in the bedroom. Ideally limit bedtime for intimacy and sleep. You may need to reconsider computer or television viewing completely.

Better Living Through Chemistry

If you must have coffee or tea, you must stop around lunchtime. Also you may want to rethink energy drinks all together. Finally anything more than a shot, a beer or a glass of wine will disrupt sleep quality.

Plus if you do need help with sleep, you may want to try an effective natural option before you start taking drugs.

Telehealth

Focused on functional rehabilitation, and targeted nutrition to support circulation, detoxification and immune function improves sleep.

For most people, a protein-based snack, about 200 calories with twenty grams of protein, two hours before bedtime works best. Also adjust your hydration schedule, about three quarts daily, so you go to bed with an empty bladder.

Also try for about half an hour of sweaty exercise daily, first thing in the morning supports sleep / wake hormones.

And finally, get some fresh air and sunshine but avoid bright lights after the sun goes down.
