Vertigo is the condition where a person experiences an unpleasant sensation of spinning while stationary. It can either be positional (in which the person only feels vertigo when in certain positions) or it can happen while sitting, standing or lying down.
These “dizzy” spells may last for a few seconds to more than an hour. Vertigo is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to sound, light, or motion. It is caused by various factors such as ear problems, brain or neck injury, infection, or diseases of the inner ear.
The main cause of vertigo is an imbalance of fluid in the three canals that run the length of the inner ear on either side of your head. The balance mechanism in your ears can be affected by any number of factors including head or neck trauma from a fall or car accident; viral infections such as herpes zoster (shingles) or influenza; exposure to loud noise; and even alcohol consumption.
