Frederik Schulin Interviews Local Parent Of Teen, Discuss Warning Signs And Substance Abuse

As a parent of a teenager, you will face many challenges- decisions about dating, driving, online school versus public school versus homeschool and more. Trying to balance family and work, multiple children, and busy schedules seem to dominate lives, not leaving room for much else.

Insight Treatment Center hosts a weekly show on KHTS radio to talk to parents and teens about mental health and navigating the hard, confusing teenage years. Led by Insight Treatment’s CEO Frederik Schulin, a late September episode hosted two guests, senior counselor Johnathon Geurino and a local parent of a teen who benefited from Insight Treatment.

In an interview-testimonial style conversation, parent Valerie, counselor Geurino, and Schulin talked about her and her daughter’s experience and their story of depression, substance abuse, and recovery.

Ms. Valerie said that she began noticing warning signs the summer before her daughter’s sophomore year of high school. Disconnection, disinterest, and isolation were present with her daughter, and not realizing that this is not normal teenage behavior, Ms. Valerie said, “I thought this is what it is like having a teenage daughter. I tried to hang in there until I realized she was starting to slip into drugs and alcohol.”

Once her daughter’s grades started slipping and reports of her falling asleep in class and skipping school came up, Valerie decided that things could not continue as they were. Constant fighting, yelling, and punishments weren’t helping her or her daughter. Her daughter’s abuse of drugs and alcohol eventually led to a hospitalization- a turning point for their lives.

“I felt like my entire world was collapsing. I had no experience with this before, and I didn’t know where to go or what to do. I started calling around and I found Insight. Someone immediately called back and said you can bring her to us. I felt such relief,” said Ms. Valerie.

Working through Valerie’s own feelings of confusion and learning together how to grow and heal through Insight Treatment was the saving change in their lives. Valerie discussed the feelings of welcome, rest, and finally some relief for her and her daughter when they joined the Insight community.

  1. The best thing to do as a parent is to make sure your children are in church every Sunday. A few days during the week at bible study wouldn’t hurt either. Instead of getting high on drugs they can get high on hearing the word of the lord amen.
