Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital Earns National Recognition For Efforts To Improve Stroke Treatment

Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital was awarded the American Heart Association’s ‘GoldPlus Get With The Guidelines’ Stroke Quality Achievement Award for the 10th consecutive year.

“Get With The Guidelines makes it easier for our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which studies show can help patients recover better,” Evelyn Ku, RN, vice president and chief nursing officer of Henry Mayo Newhall said. “The end goal is to ensure more people in the Santa Clarita Valley can experience longer, healthier lives.”

The award is given to stroke treatment programs for their commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized and research-based guidelines while also placing an emphasis on educating patients to help them manage their health and recovery at home.

“We are incredibly pleased to recognize Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital for its commitment to caring for patients with stroke,” Steven Messe, M.D., chairperson of the Stroke System of Care Advisory Group said. “Participation in Get With The Guidelines is associated with improved patient outcomes, fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates – a win for health care systems, families and communities.”

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts, resulting in part of the brain being unable to get the blood and oxygen it needs, resulting in brain cells dying.

Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.

Henry Mayo also received the American Heart Association’s Target: Type 2 Honor Roll award, which aims to ensure patients with Type 2 diabetes receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke.
