Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital neurosurgeon Dr. Parham Yashar not only performs brain surgery, but surgeries involving the nerves of the spinal cord and peripheral nerves like carpal tunnel surgery as well.

“Most people think of the brain as the most important neurological element, but part of your central nervous system involves the brain and the spinal cord, and what comes off of the spinal cord are the nerves,” Yashar explained. “So anything spine-related is in the realm of a neurosurgeon.”

Because back pain is estimated to affect about 90 percent of Americans at some point in their lives, potential spine surgery patients are common consultations for Yashar.

However, Yashar noted that just because he is a neurosurgeon does not mean that he will always recommend surgery as the best course of treatment.

“The most important thing to remember is the surgeon knows and has the tools in their pocket in order to address surgical problems, but that’s not the goal of the surgeon,” he explained. “Our goal is to provide patients with the opportunity to get better — whatever that involves.”

Before determining surgery is needed, Yashar often recommends a number of non-surgical options or conservative therapies, ranging from physical therapy to acupuncture to weight loss.

In addition to these, he discusses interventional pain procedures that may work in combination with these conservative therapies with his patients.

“Obviously when all of these options don’t work, or don’t work well enough, then we can consider surgical ones,” Yashar said.
