Insight Treatment Center Discusses The Role Of Parents In Their Teen’s Healing Process

Insight Treatment Center is a local Santa Clarita resource for teens struggling with anxiety, depression, trauma, or other stressors.

CEO and Partner of Insight Treatment Center recently discussed the role of parents and the importance of involvement in the healing and recovery of their teens.

Frederik Schulin, owner of Insight Treatment Center, spoke on KHTS radio during an episode of Insight Treatment Hour on June 7, 2021, discussing family dynamics when a teen is in crisis. He was joined by local Santa Clarita counselor, Christina Sieren and together they went over some helpful information and facts for families in the area.

Schulin opened the episode by explaining why a teen is struggling with mental health issues more often than not, the parent(s) have to take responsibility to understand that the teen may be mimicking behavior and struggles from within the family- what goes on in the home. Because the nature of struggle is a family affair, it is important for parents to be involved during the treatment process.

Parents need to be involved so that they may gain tools and professional advice on how to work through their own issues and tools in how to guide and assist their child.

Schulin and Sieren mentioned how often one of the most trying times for a teen in crisis is when returning from a residential program or facility. Often the teen has made immense progress and learned many things through the program, but if they return to the same environment in which they struggled and nothing has changed or improved, it is much more likely that the teen will fall back into the same patterns and behaviors as before.

Sieren specifically encouraged the development of open, authentic, and reflective discussion between parent and teen. When both parties can openly talk about their struggles and shortcomings, whether the parent can identify that their own anxiety is being projected upon their child, or the teen noting that they have bad habits regarding their phone, progress is made when all involved can be honest with themselves and each other.

“In that way, it’s a parallel process for parents, teens, and families to really work together and be much more allies and collaborators versus getting stuck in a dynamic of ‘I have all the answers as the parent, and you’re gonna do this’” said Santa Clarita counselor Christina Sieren on air with KHTS, emphasizing the vitality of open conversation.

Parents often feel the massive pressure of the idea that they should have all the answers, they should know what to do in these difficult situations, where in reality no one has the perfect answer, there is no guidebook for how to care for a teen in crisis. That is why it is so crucial for parents to be open to seeking outside counsel and help from someone who has been trained and can give them tools and guidance.
