Therapist Jennifer Campoy at Insight Treatment Center in Santa Clarita discusses how teenagers and parents can form connections instead of misunderstandings.

The coronavirus pandemic forced teenagers to be isolated a lot more than usual. They were no longer allowed to socialize with their friends, both in and out of school. Teenagers were often left to entertain themselves by playing video games or video chatting with friends. This entertainment can only occupy teenagers for so long.

Soon, the world realized the pandemic would be around a lot longer than everyone thought. The pandemic began making teenagers become isolated, spend more time alone in their rooms and disconnect from their parents.

“At first, people were playing board games and they were kind of making the best of it, and having some together time because we didn’t know how long this would last. Then it went to a place where people were all kind of isolating and just tired of each other. But there’s so much deprivation so the kids didn’t really have as much help putting their feelings into words,” Campoy said.

Campoy discusses how a lot of parents tend to be their children’s cheerleader. While they may mean well, this type of encouragement might not be the best way to connect with your child. This encouragement does not help the parent understand what their child is going through during this time. Campoy encourages parents to have a genuine conversation with their child. Parents can express to their child that they support them, and are here for them whenever they are ready to talk.

“Not only is it emphasizing connections, but the parent is okay with not knowing and is recognizing their own humanity in the process. Which is ultimately more trustworthy than this kind of problem solving and cheerleading that is meant to be positive and supportive and well-intended. But sometimes kids don’t trust it if it’s not genuine,” Campoy said.

Insight Treatment Center in Santa Clarita is a Teen Mental Health Treatment Center that helps teenagers 13 to 19 years of age who are struggling with mental health or substance abuse.

Insight Treatment Programs is an outpatient treatment program for teens and their families. The program treats teen mental health issues and teen substance abuse.
