Dr. Trevor Small, the director of clinical development and Rachel Rainne, clinical director of an intensive outpatient program in Santa Clarita spoke during the Insight Treatment Hour of trauma in teens, mental health, and substance abuse.
Rainne, having double majored in college with criminal justice and sociology, started working at a residential treatment center in Colorado where she began her career path.
Getting “back to normal” after traumatic events can often be hard and when many young teens and adults try to cope with trauma, addiction becomes a horrible invitation that they might slide down.
When one loses a sense of self, they can turn to something that gives them comfort, identity, and something that gives them any sort of feeling.
Disassociation with the environment can be a way to numb out what one might be going through when dealing with their traumatic events. Another way one might show signs of trauma can be symptoms that may seem like they can be related to ADHD or hypervigilance.

Not being able to sit still and constantly losing focus. This can lead to a trauma patient getting pushed onto medication for a disease they don’t even have, making symptoms worsen and increasing damage upon their well being. Teen mental health with trauma needs to be treated in a correct and classful way.
Just being there for your child with trauma can do so much, helping them move through those traumatic feelings, and finding ways to express those feelings in a healthy way can give them the sense of community to pace their recovery.
Insight Treatment Center recommends to not let the trauma just sit there and to create a safe space for your child that will allow them to feel the safety necessary for their health. Trauma does not always have to be dealt with by hobbies or with discussions with loved ones. An optimal way to destress our days and ease our emotions are animals. With service pets such as dogs, they can be in tune with their owners more often than you think.
Insight Treatment Programs is an outpatient treatment program for teens and their families. The program treats teen mental health issues and teen substance abuse. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, ADHD and more. Rehab services are also offered to help teens with drug and alcohol abuse issues. Insight Treatment Programs also offers academic services for teens who have had their school life affected by mental health and substance abuse issues.
