Insight Treatment Hour In Santa Clarita Explores Nervous System, Relationships With Food

On Insight Treatment Hour on KHTS, Santa Clarita Valley therapist Dr. Elena Michaels was featured in a discussion on mental health, the nervous system and relationships with food.

The subjects of mental health, the nervous system and relationships with food were analyzed on this week’s Insight Treatment Hour with Dr. Elena Michaels.

“Everybody knows about counseling,” Michaels said. “I want to talk about how to get the brain working so that the new skills the family members are learning can be integrated into their brain function.”

The therapist used the visual metaphor of a pyramid, describing the big part of a pyramid as most of the mind, where much of how we operate is based on learned experiences.

The top of the pyramid, a much smaller percentage of the pyramid, is the region using logic and reason, coming from the conscious mind, the unconscious mind, the physical body, and the environment, according to Dr. Michaels.

The discussion shifted to food and its relationship to psychology, with Dr. Michaels describing skipping meals and lack of protein as being major factors contributing to bad mental health.

“Too many carbs, too much sugar, breaks down logic and reason,” Michaels said.

A balanced nervous system, which includes diet as a major factor, is key to mental health and balanced family dynamics.

“Let them eat something!” Michaels said on feeding your child after school. “A snack is not a stop at Starbucks and getting a latte and a muffin or a sweet roll. That is not a snack to get your child to talk to you. That’s a snack to get them to go home and get them to sedate themselves in front of a computer screen, a video screen, or in their room alone.”
