No Such Thing As ‘Too Sensitive’, With Insight Teen Treatment Hour

The Insight Teen Treatment Hour on KHTS is a radio show that discusses teen mental health with local professionals focused on educating teens and their parents on mental health.

CEO of Insight Treatment and host of the radio show of the same name, Frederik Schulin hosted local marriage and family therapist Mishka Clavijo Kimball to talk about a group of people known as highly-sensitive people.

Kimball, a highly-sensitive person herself, is a licensed family therapist, life coach, and professor of psychology with a passion for helping people learn how to reduce anxiety and overwhelming feelings from being highly-sensitive.

One point Kimball made right off the bat, is that she wholeheartedly believes that being highly sensitive is not a bad thing. It is not diagnosable or a disorder, it is simply a trait that many people are born with.

“Twenty percent of the population are found to be highly sensitive people. The scientific term for it is sensory processing sensitivity. It means that our brains work a little differently than someone who is not highly sensitive…This makes us more intuitive, intelligent, creative, and we can really thrive. It also comes with challenges. Because we are so aware of stimuli, it can also more easily overwhelm us,” said Kimball.

According to Kimball, some common triggers that highly-sensitive people experience include loud noises, crowds, fabrics, and strong scents all can often lead to overstimulation, feeling overwhelmed, and lashing out or shutting down.

For a parent, this means that self care and communication are extremely important. Voice when you feel overwhelmed, and be extra intentional when planning self care. Self care is not just bubble baths and a donut, but also includes quiet time, nutritious eating, movement, and meditation. Setting these boundaries and making these habits can bring more peace and harmony to your life.

For teens, this could look like shutting down, not talking, and more. Parents can help their teens by lightening their schedules and prioritizing proper sleep, ample time for homework, and open lines of communication.

For anyone who is highly-sensitive or has a highly-sensitive teen, seeking professional help for tips and tricks for how to communicate and work through feelings of anxiety is a great idea that will improve daily life as well as relationships.
