Oakmont of Santa Clarita retirement community has implemented policies to protect residents and staff from illness during the coronavirus pandemic.

Officials from Oakmont of Santa Clarita said that as of April 27, Dr. John-Mark Geiss, DO has been appointed to the position of medical director for Oakmont Senior Living.

As a board-certified family physician who focuses on geriatrics and senior care, Dr. Geiss has been working to integrate technical solutions into retirement communities in order to facilitate “a better quality of life for our residents and improved resident care outcome,” officials report.

In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Dr. Geiss said that he and Oakmont staff are working to ensure all locations follow government and health care agency guidelines, such as “exercising appropriate social distancing, use of personal protective equipment, and resident isolation, when necessary.”

“I believe as we come together as a senior living and health care community, we can accomplish amazing things and come out even stronger together in the end,” Geiss said.

In addition to “enhanced our community cleaning and disinfecting protocols,” and regular health screenings for residents, staff and essential healthcare visitors, “all team members are wearing masks in every community,” Oakmont officials state.

Oakmont of Santa Clarita’s “executive chef and team of culinary professionals” are working to ensure all residents have healthy options available while also accommodating “any special needs that may come up due to dietary restrictions or health concerns,” officials said.

Food delivery is currently being handled via “contactless delivery” in order to limit outside contact with Oakmont of Santa Clarita’ kitchens and kitchen staff. Additionally, Oakmont officials report that meals are being delivered directly to residents’ homes.

In order to help residents stay active and improve their overall health, Oakmont of Santa Clarita officials say they are “temporarily shifting from group activities to an apartment home-based life engagement program.”

“The Oakmont team is constantly looking for individualized, person-centered ways to keep residents active, engaged and healthy by incorporating their life story, interests and preferences,” Oakmont officials said.

Additionally, Oakmont of Santa Clarita staff are available to help residents use technology, such as computer software, to stay in touch with their loved ones.
