Hosts from the Traditions Health Hour, May Ronci and Jim Holloway, discussed where hospice care takes place and how they are able to bring hospice care services to patients wherever they are needed.
“Hospice is anywhere the patient is,” said Ronci.
“It could be in the patient’s home setting, it could be in a nursing home,” Ronci said, “some patients are in boarding care.” According to Ronci, boarding care is a home owned by someone that is licensed to provide care for patients. These homes, according to Ronci, are usually modified to provide services to meet patient needs.
“A lot of people are in assisted living and they consider that their home so you can actually have hospice there,” Holloway said.

Ronci spoke about a patient who was indigent and living out of a hotel. According to Ronci, Traditions Health Hospice was able to provide in home hospice care to the patient, despite the patient living in a hotel room, because that is where the patient considered their home.
According to Holloway and Ronci, hospice care services are always available to patients and their families when they are needed. According to Ronci, different patients have different needs and in home hospice care providers will work with patients and their families to work out a hospice care plan that suits their situation best.
Officials say that a hospice care provider may not always be at a patient’s home providing in home hospice care, but the patient can always reach out to their hospice care provider in case they need additional support after hours.
Ronci says that for Traditions Health Hospice specifically, they run a 24/7 triage line staffed by registered nurses that patients can call into if they are in need of assistance. If the patient is unable to be helped by the nurse on the phone then Traditions will send out a qualified hospice care provider to the patient’s home to help.
“We don’t ever want our patients to feel like they are out there by themselves trying to navigate this very difficult time,” Ronci said.
