Orthodontist In Santa Clarita Explains What To Expect With Invisalign

An orthodontist in Santa Clarita is explaining what someone can expect when choosing to straighten their teeth with a clear liner like Invisalign.

Dr. Megan LeCornu of Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics described Invisalign as a clear, plastic tray that is “perfectly” adapted to the teeth.

“It’s really, really hard to even see when patients are wearing them, and basically it feels like a very thin little mouthguard,” LeCornu said. “Some people say it’s very similar to their bleaching trays, but it’s just a very thin amount of plastic that covers each tooth, and it’s almost like a glove for your teeth.”

LeCornu noted that Invisalign should only be taken out for eating, and otherwise should be worn all day and night, including when the person is sleeping.

“Invisalign and clear liners in general work just as good as braces as long as you’re wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day, because then the teeth are feeling the force for the maximum number of hours and you’re able to get the movements that we need,” LeCornu said.

Trays are usually switched out at home every seven to 14 days to accommodate the ongoing changes taking place with the teeth, and the orthodontist typically re-checks the patient every 8-12 weeks to make any necessary adjustments, according to LeCornu.

“You’ll come to the office, we see you and we deliver however many number of liners we feel is appropriate, and then we check you after a specific amount of time,” she said. “Let’s say you’re on seven day changes, and we see you in 10 weeks. We give you 10 trays and we check you after those 10 weeks and we make sure things are moving how they’re supposed to, and we make changes.”

The average treatment time with Invisalign is about 18 to 22 months, but could be as short as six to 12 months if the person has had braces in the past and is simply looking to correct a “relapse.”

“Every case is different,” LeCornu said. “It really depends on your specific needs and your situation and how much work needs to be done. Every case is very, very individualized.”
