Physical, Social Needs Catered To With Elder Care Services From Comfort Keepers

With Comfort Keepers’ elder care services, Santa Clarita seniors can limit the number of people to whom they’re exposed during the coronavirus pandemic while maintaining physical and social health.

Myles McNamara, Franchise Owner of Comfort Keepers Santa Clarita, explained how their elder care services allow caregivers to act as a point of contact for seniors’ physical and social needs, reducing the number of trips or visits seniors need to care for their physical health.

Comfort Keepers officials further stressed that staff are trained to provide social care, during which “caregivers will interact with seniors socially, mentally and physically, ensuring they look forward to what they are doing every single day.”

The in-home caregiver staff are subject to “a lot of specific precautions” during normal cold and flu season, which have been “quadrupled” to help keep seniors safe during the coronavirus pandemic, McNamara explained.

“We keep in close contact with our caregivers, (doing) contract tracing,” McNamara said. “What we can do is actually reduce the traffic into our seniors’ homes. A lot of the adult kids have opted to do just that, rather than a lot of traffic coming in and out.”

McNamara noted that many services exist to help residents receive at-home deliveries and have workers come to take care of menial tasks. However, for seniors who aren’t tech-savvy, Comfort Keepers staff can manage these services and appointments on behalf of their clients.

The elder care specialist noted that seniors “need to have access to the internet” not only to order services such as grocery and medication delivery, pet supplies and pet care services and other in-home deliveries, but also to communicate over social platforms like Zoom.

“We can … help (seniors) solve that problem (of internet connectivity), getting them hooked up to Wi-Fi or (have) internet (installed) into their home,” McNamara said. “A lot of our caregivers have their own … devices too (and) they can order things (for the seniors).”

Comfort Keepers’ elder care staff are particularly skilled at helping their clients stay socially active. While previously, this task involved transportation help, during the coronavirus pandemic, many are helping keep seniors keep in touch with loved ones via technology, and also by lending an ear during these difficult times.

“One thing that’s overlooked a lot is mental needs … isolation, loneliness, depression — we really stress the companionship aspect of our seniors in the home,” said McNamara. “There’s got to be a well-rounded care plan … or care attention given.”

Because health professionals’ advice and government guidelines are constantly changing, Comfort Keepers are staying on top of the news, adapting to any new information given to protect the health of seniors throughout the valley.
