“Why do we get our eyes checked? Why do we get our teeth checked?” asked Nola Aronson of Advanced Audiology. “Why do we consider our ears being checked not important? That’s the last thing that people ever do.”
Many people may put off getting a hearing screening because they assume if they have a hearing loss, they will need an oversized, obvious hearing aid that makes them feel “old.”

“They used to be these big awful things, and they were only for what we considered ‘old’ people,” Aronson said, adding that hearing devices today are smaller and less noticeable than many bluetooth headsets and ear buds.
Aronson recommends residents get a hearing screening regardless of whether or not they have noticed problems with their hearing.
“Around the age of 50, we should all be considering getting a free baseline hearing screening so we know where we’re at, and then we can go from there,” she said. “We don’t want to wait until people start complaining.”
One of Aronson’s patients was even able to use her baseline hearing screening to prove to her insurance company that she suffered a hearing loss as a result of the airbags being deployed in a car crash.
Aronson continued that studies have shown that correcting hearing loss can prevent the person from feeling isolated by helping them keep active, as well as improve self esteem and confidence.
“Addressing your hearing may be one of the best things you can do to stay vibrant and maintain an active lifestyle,” said Aronson. “As you evolve into getting older, you want to have a better self.”
