Santa Clarita Audiologist Nola Aronson of Advanced Audiology is drawing attention to the correlation studies have found between a person’s hearing and the overall health of the brain.

Because hearing is critical in keeping the brain stimulated and active, untreated hearing loss has been linked with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease by some studies, according to Aronson.
“When you have a hearing loss and you’re missing information and your brain is not getting that information, … there’s a problem,” said Aronson.

Aronson has seen this in her own life with her 88-year-old mother, who lived in New York for many years, and felt that she didn’t need to wear her hearing aids because she lived alone.
The decision was recently made to move Aronson’s mother to California, and though she started wearing her hearing aids again every day, Aronson has noticed signs of dementia that may be related to the years without auditory stimulation.
“She’s forgetting words and things like that,” Aronson said. “I think that has a lot to do with the fact that all the studies and the research have shown in the last two years that when you’re missing information for a long period of time (it affects the brain).”
On average, it takes people with a hearing loss about seven years to make the decision to get a hearing device, according to Aronson.
“By that time, the brain has missed so much information,” she said.
Aronson is encouraging anyone who suspects they or a loved one might have an untreated hearing loss to schedule an appointment for a free hearing screening at Advanced Audiology, where they can establish a hearing baseline and learn about hearing loss solutions.
In addition, anyone who chooses Advanced Audiology for their hearing device needs is helping make a difference in the community, as the Santa Clarita audiologist donates 10 percent of all hearing aid proceeds to local nonprofits.
