Hearing Doctor and Owner of Santa Clarita Hearing Center Ginny Veloz, Au.D. described how Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids can help people who experience hearing loss eliminate cords from headphones, speakers and other devices while helping them hear phone calls, television shows and music.

Dr. Veloz was quick to assure hearing patients that the special functions offered by Bluetooth aren’t necessary, and hearing aids can be used without them for those who aren’t technologically inclined.

“We don’t have to use (the Bluetooth technology functions), so I don’t want people to get afraid of the things I’m going to talk about,” the Santa Clarita hearing doctor said assuringly.

Bluetooth is a wireless standard that allows cell phones, iPads and other devices to send audio to speakers, headphones and hearing aids over the air. Wireless technologies like Bluetooth allow users to get rid of audio cords and cables, helping keep households free of tripping hazards.

Dr. Veloz explained that, using Bluetooth, when hearing aid users answer a cell phone call, the phone will wirelessly transmit the caller’s voice directly to the hearing aid. In other words, Bluetooth-enabled hearing aids amplify the caller’s voice directly from the phone hardware itself, skipping the air gap in-between the phone and the listener’s ear.

This means that “you’re talking into the phone, however you’re hearing the voice right into your ears” through the hearing aid, the Santa Clarita hearing doctor explained.

“The voice is amplified appropriately for you,” said Dr. Veloz. “So the sound quality is very, very good and it helps understand what people are saying when you’re having some difficulty hearing on the phone.”

Besides cell phones, many devices have Bluetooth capabilities. In addition to using the Bluetooth functions of hearing aids for phone conversations, they can be used to listen to music, watch TV shows and pick up on microphone inputs.

“If you want to listen to music, if you want to watch a movie on your iPad, if you want to play a game, all the sounds that you would hear through that device will come directly into your ears,” Dr. Veloz explained. “So really, really amazing technology.”

This technology is particularly helpful for people like students, who need to listen to long lectures in classroom settings.

“There’s a little clip that’s available, a little remote microphone that can be given to your spouse or a teacher that they would clip on them and their voice goes directly into your ears,” Dr. Veloz said. “This has changed the game for kids at school. We’re no longer putting a big speaker next to them and calling them out and making them stand out in front of their peers. It’s very discrete; it’s very easy to use for the teachers and it’s really really a wonderful change in our field.”

Dr. Veloz explained that Bluetooth features “typically come standard” with most hearing aids on the market today. Still, she said that people who don’t want this added functionality don’t have to use it.

“People are always asking me, ‘Dr. Veloz, what is the best hearing aid? Tell me, what’s the best hearing aid; what’s the secret?’ And really the secret is the best hearing aid is the one that you’ll wear,” the Santa Clarita hearing doctor explained. “It’s that simple.”
