Urbina defined anxiety as the unsettled feeling of worry or nervousness about the outcome of something that is uncertain.
“It gets to a point where the worrying continues over and over and over again, and you just go down this road where now you’re just feeling the physical manifestations of that constant worry and fear,” he said.

While anxiety stems from the mind’s ability to go into “fight or flight” mode when it detects danger, uncertainty or the lack of being in control of a situation, Urbina noted that it occurs whether the perceived circumstance is real or not.
“A lot of times some of the things that we worry about that ends up turning into anxiety, … whether the perception is real or not, it’s actually real to us because we’ve made it real and we feel it, and so it is,” he said.
People who “unconsciously” experience anxiety view it as something that is happening to them that they are not in control of, and typically see it as a result of something outside of themselves, rather than a perceived worry or fear they have created within them, according to Urbina.
“It’s just something that creeps upon you and you think it’s happening because of specific circumstances in your life, like, ‘My current anxiety is because I don’t have a job,’” he said. “You’re tying it to a possible result or outcome in your life that you do not want to be so, that may or may not actually happen, versus it’s just a choice you are making from the fear of it really happening.”
However, Urbina continued that he believes feeling anxiety is a choice, and those who strive to live their lives in a “conscious” way can take steps to choose differently, if taught properly on how to see it in that way.
“You’re choosing to be anxious whether you’re conscious of it or not,” he said. “The minute you start to wake up and become consciously aware that you actually are anxious and that it’s gone down a road that’s now unhealthy in your current state, it is the moment you can become highly aware that you can actually choose to not be anxious, that you actually are in control of your own choice in the matter, no matter what.”
