A Santa Clarita orthodontist is cautioning the community against the use of do-it-yourself clear liners that claim to straighten teeth without the supervision of a doctor.

“There’s this huge surge right now of these clear liners on the market,” said Dr. Megan LeCornu of Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics. “It’s very interesting because when we move teeth, there’s a lot of biological things that are going on, and so it’s really important that you do have a doctor clear you prior to getting your teeth moved.”

LeCornu has seen a number of people who attempted to straighten their own teeth using the do-it-yourself clear liners either lose teeth or develop severe bite issues that require jaw surgery to correct.

Multiple patients are also being re-treated at Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics after attempting to straighten their own teeth at home and seeing problems as a result, according to LeCornu.

“Those do-it-yourself treatments, there are no doctors following your treatment,” she said. “Now that we’ve seen a lot of scary things come through, I just think it’s important that people are educated on that.”

For those considering using do-it-yourself clear liners, LeCornu recommends at least coming in for a free consultation with a doctor first.

“I think you should get a consultation prior to looking into doing any type of do-it-yourself treatment,” she said. “All of our consultations are complimentary.”
