Santa Clarita Orthodontist Discusses What To Expect After Getting Braces

Embrace Your Smile Orthodontics in Santa Clarita recently explained what new patients can  expect to experience immediately after getting new braces.

“When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days,” said Embrace Your Smile officials.

To relieve some of the soreness in your mouth, rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater mouthwash. To make this, dissolve a teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of warm water.

If the pain and tenderness is more severe, over the counter medication can be taken every 4 to 6 hours.

Until they toughen up and get more accustomed to the surface of your braces, the lips, cheeks, and tongue may also become irritated in the first couple weeks. Wax can be used on the braces to lessen the pain.

Teeth may also start to feel loose. This is completely normal. Teeth loosen first before they can be moved into their corrected positions.

It is common for a wire or band to become loose. If this happens or if a wire breaks, call the office immediately to schedule an appointment.

In order for your braces to do the job they are designed to do, please care for them and follow any instructions that the orthodontists give you. This includes:

  • In order to assure the teeth and jaws move to their proper places, please wear all rubber bands and any other appliances as directed.
  • Keep your teeth clean. Brushing and flossing regularly is important in maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
  • If you play athletics, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces.
  • Eat the right foods that won’t damage your braces. Stick to softer foods and try to avoid tough meats, raw vegetables, and hard breads.
