Kristina de Bree; MA, LMFT and Valencia EMDR therapist; described talk therapy as “the most common type of therapy,” noting that it is also “the oldest form of therapy that exists.”

“There has previously been a lot of research to support it,” de Bree said. “It can be very effective for families, for resolving family conflict or marital conflict. That being said, it has its limitations.”

de Bree noted that, since talk therapy usually involves long-term treatment over many sessions, it can be one of the more expensive types of therapy. The Santa Clarita therapist additionally explained that, with traditional talk therapy, “the focus is on managing the symptoms instead of eliminating the underlying cause of the problem.”

de Bree said that her personal experiences with therapy led her to invest in EMDR as a tool for her clients.

“I, personally, found EMDR after having gone to seven different types of therapists,” de Bree said. “I was getting band-aid-over-the-wound type therapy for 20 years until I found EMDR and realized that I was completely able to eradicate (my own trauma).”

The Santa Clarita therapist said that this isn’t an uncommon story. She explained that many of her clients have been to “four or five different therapists” who respond well to EMDR after having exhausted other therapy options.

“EMDR is done much faster, which means it’s less expensive,” de Bree explained. “It’s endorsed by numerous professional associations worldwide. There’s no homework that you have to do in between sessions. It’s focused on processing and less talking, so … overall, (it’s) not considered a talk therapy.”

de Bree noted that while EMDR “does eliminate the core problems,” it can’t get rid of “organic problems” such as the genetic components underlying bipolar I disorder or schizophrenia.

“It’s not going to eliminate genetic organic problems, but it can eliminate other problems,” de Bree explained. “There are many things that can be fixed with EMDR.”

  1. What is EMDR? Never heard of it or how it works. The article never defines it or describes it, so I have no idea how it compares to traditional therapy.
