Teen Mental Health And Online Learning Discussed By Officials From The Hart School District And Insight Treatment

Online learning and teen mental health was the focus of the Insight Treatment Hour hosted by Frederik Schulin with guest Kathy Hunter, Assistant Superintendent for the Hart School District.

According to Kathy Hunter, students in the Hart District are at a point in their lives where they are the most social and the COVID-19 pandemic is having effects on teen mental health.

“Having this pandemic which has caused our kids to not just be isolated from school and their teachers, but from each other … has, I would say, been devastating for them,” Hunter said.

“A lot of the kids that I speak to have described more apathy,” Hunter said, describing how students are feeling less motivated to accomplish their academic goals.

The show host, Frederik Schulin, noted that at the Insight teen treatment centers they were noticing that children with ADHD and anxiety were being particularly affected by the shift to online learning.

“With ADHD we’re having to ask our teachers to make sure they give ‘brain breaks’ and numerous other types of opportunities for students to take a break from sitting in front of that screen,” Hunter said.

Hunter said that the Hart School District has plenty of support staff to help address teen mental health issues. Hunter explained that these staff are there for both teens and their families to access teen mental health resources.

According to Hunter, parents and teachers should be watching out for students who are acting differently from how they would usually act.

Hunter gave an example that if a child usually participates well in class but is no longer interacting with peers, the teacher and others then it might be a warning sign that there might be an underlying teen mental health issue.

“Attendance and grades become the data that we look at to determine that … we need to make some type of an intervention,” Hunter said.

According to Hunter, parents should have a feeling for how their child typically acts so they can be aware of when their child starts to exhibit atypical behavior.

“Every single child is different and so their signs for their distress is also different,” Hunter said.

Schulin and Hunter encourage parents to look out for signs of mental illness during this unprecedented time of distance learning.
