Teen Mental Health And The Different Levels Of Mental Health Care

Frederik Schulin, CEO of Insight teen mental health program in Santa Clarita, went on the Insight Treatment Hour to discuss the different levels of mental health care available to teens experiencing mental health issues.

According to Schulin, the highest level of mental health care for teenagers involves a hospitalization. Schulin says this sort of treatment is suited for teenagers who are believed to be an immediate threat to themselves or others.

Schulin says that parents typically will bring their teen struggling with a mental health issue to an emergency room and then the hospital might transfer the patient to a different section of the hospital specializing in mental health treatment.

“The step down from [the hospital] is what we consider residential treatment programs,” Schulin said.

According to Schulin, there are many different types of teen residential treatment programs. Some residential programs for teens are aimed at a short stay and others are aimed at longer term treatment for teenagers, according to Schulin.

Schulin says that the next level of teen mental health treatment below a residential treatment program is an intensive outpatient program or a partial hospitalization program. Schulin’s own teen mental health treatment program in Santa Clarita, Insight Treatment, is an intensive outpatient program that focuses on teen mental health issues and substance abuse issues.

“It’s a program where teens typically would come after school and do three or four hours of treatment – three or four or even five days a week sometimes,” Schulin said regarding intensive outpatient programs aimed at treating teens.

Schulin says the final level of care in most cases in outpatient treatment. According to Schulin, this type of teen mental health treatment typically involves teens seeing a therapist on a weekly basis. On occasion the teen’s family might also sit in on sessions, according to Schulin.

According to Schulin, teens can be admitted to the different levels of mental health treatment programs based on their symptoms and behaviors. Some issues that might qualify a teen for a mental health treatment program include suicidal ideation, self-harm, social isolation and some type of mental health diagnosis, according to Schulin.
