While The Way Out Recovery SCV remains open and continues to provide services during the coronavirus pandemic, Program Director Bob Sharits created a short video for the community on social media.

“We can do a lot of things to make sure that we’re maintaining our sanity and our sobriety and our wellbeing, and treating each other kindly and with love and compassion,” Sharits said.

Sharits’ first tip is to take advantage of the extra time at home by being mindful of eating choices and experimenting with home cooking.

“We have an opportunity to cut out those junk foods and those fast foods and those sugary things, … and replace it with some good, healthy foods: fresh fruits and vegetables and all the healthy stuff that’s available to us,” he said. “We could experiment with a lot of different really cool recipes right now.”

Next, Sharits advised people to make sure they continue to drink enough water each day.

“Make sure that you’re hydrating,” he said. “If you do that, you will notice a change in your energy level and just an overall improvement in your wellbeing.”

Finding ways to stay active at home is Sharits’ third tip, whether that means doing “old fashioned” exercises like jumping jacks and push-ups or accessing exercise videos online.

Sharits also encouraged people to go for walks, bike rides or hikes, but to do so with the appropriate judgment and compliance with social distancing requirements.

“If you are going to go outside and take a walk in the neighborhood, by all means do so, but be mindful of other people — keep your distance,” Sharits said. “Be especially mindful of the trails that are closed and the places that we’re not supposed to be going right now.”

By taking these steps to maintain physical wellbeing during the “Safer at Home” order, Sharits noted that it can help reduce stress levels, which in turn has a positive impact on emotional and mental wellbeing too.

“We’re in a stressful time right now, and stress is the key component to taking drug and alcohol use and mental health issues to the next level, where you don’t want them to be,” he said. “So make sure you get up off the couch and you get moving and do some stuff around the house, and just get that body active as much as you possibly can in this time.”

Sharits continued, “What that will do is it will translate into emotionally feeling better, into having mental clarity, into being spiritually connected with the rest of the world, and most importantly, to treating the people around you, treating yourself and treating those that you love with kindness, compassion and love.”

Anyone who might be struggling as the coronavirus pandemic continues is encouraged to reach out to The Way Out Recovery SCV for help.

“If you need anything from us, please, please, please give us a call,” Sharits said. “We are here for you during this time.”
